Using “you ni” to say in “order to” in Japanese

The “you ni” that you will learn today is different from the “you ni suru” you learned in the previous post. Think of the “you ni” in the same meaning as “in order to” or “so that…” Another useful phrase too. Let’s find out.

わかる よう に、ゆっくり はなして ください - Speak slowly, so that I can understand you

たくさん まちがえない よう に、 よく かんがえて ください - Please think carefully, so that you won’t make a lot of mistakes.

Words to learn

ゆっくり - slowly

はなす - to speak

たくさん - lots, many, much

まちがえる、間違える - to make mistake

かんがえる、考える - to think

Explanation

To use this grammar phrase correctly, there are two things to take note of. You may use “you ni” ように after a plain verb or a -nai ない form only. Short examples below

わかる よう に - in order to understand it

つかう よう に - in order to use it

こわさない よう に - in order not to break it
