Learn the Two ways to say “Maybe” in Japanese

The word “maybe” is also commonly use in the English language, same goes to the Japanese language. There are two ways to say it. Using “tabun”たぶん or “kamoshirenai”かもしれない. Let’s find out how.

Explanation

To use kamoshirenai かもしれない correctly, here are some rules you need to take note of.

You may use かもしれない at the end of a sentence only after following:

a verb in plain form or

E.g ゆき が ふ かもしれない - It might snow.

a nai ない form or

あした、ゆき が ふらない かもしれない - It might not snow.

a -ta た form or

もう ゆき が ふった かもしれない - It might have snowed already.

any of the two adjectives that occurs

あつ かもしれない、き を つけて! - It might be hot, be careful

かんたん かもしれない - It might be easy

Learn to use たぶん

For this case, its place first, rather than placing it at the end of a sentence. Examples below

たぶん あつ - Maybe it’s hot

たぶん かんたん だ - Maybe it’s easy

たぶん ゆき が ふ - Maybe it will snow

たぶん ゆき が ふった - Maybe it snowed

たぶん ゆき が ふらない - Maybe it won’t snow
