Learn How to say “I think”, “I believe” and “I say” in Japanese using “to” Particle

Another useful and commonly use phrase in Japanese is using the と particle with おもう”think”、しんじる”believe” and いう”say”. The と particle is use at the end of a sentence. Let’s find out more.

じかん は まだ ある おもいます - I think there is still time left

時間 は まだ ある 思います

Words to learn

まだ - still

じかん、時間 - time

ある - there is (use for non-living things only)

Explanation

As you can see that in order to use “I think”, と is added before the おもいます. So first construct what you want the listener to know, which is the じかん は まだ ある meaning “There is still time left” then combine it with the と おもいます to express a little uncertainty.

Another example here

かれ は まだ いる 思います - I think he is still there/around.

Words to learn

かれ、彼 - him/he

いる - be there/be around (use for living things only)

Other uses

彼 は まだ いる しんじます - I believe he is still there/around

You may even use it with しんじる.

Now we shall learn how to use “to iu” と 言う. Look at the example below

じかん は まだ ある いいました - I said there is still time left

Things to take note

いいました is the polite paste tense of 言う meaning “said” using the -masu form

Explanation

と言う is use mainly for saying “I say” or “I said” something. You can even add the 彼 は in the beginning to indicate that “he said”. Example below

かれ は じかん まだ ある と いいました - He said that there is still time left.

Or combine it with the teiruている form like this

かれ は じかん まだ ある と いっていました - He was saying that there is still time left
