Learn How to say “Going to do something” in Japanese

You probably would want to tell a Japanese that you want to go to do something. Thats what we shall learn in today’s post. By combining the root of a verb that uses the -masu form with the ni iku に いく, you can easily express what you want to do. Example like “go to eat”, “go to drink” or “go use”…etc. Lets see how we can use such expressions.

The first you need to do is to think of the -masuます form. So for example, tabemasuたべます meaning to eat. Then remove the -masuます form and add the particle に after it. And follow by the ikuいく behind it. Clearer example below.

たべます - ます = たべ

たべ + particle に + いく = たべ に いく

Kanji would look like this 食べ に 行く

So tabeiku食べ に 行く means “to go to eat”. What about “go to drink”?

のむます - ます = のみ

のみ + particle に + いく = のみ に いく

With kanji would look like this 飲み に 行く

There you have it. So below is a sentence example.

あした、どこ へ たべ に いきましょうか? - Tomorrow, Where shall we go to eat ?

のみ に 行きたい - I want to go drink

You can combine it with other forms like the -tai form as well, which means “want to” The -tai form was covered in an earlier post.

Thats all for today’s guide to learn Japanese. Stay tune for more :)
